In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, Australia defeated their arch-rivals England by 36 runs to win their second Group game. After scoring 201/7, the Australians restricted defending champions to 165/6. This was Australia’s first win against England in the 20-over World Cup since 2007.
Match Summary:
Ist Innings: (Australia Batting)
Having won the toss, England elected to bowl initially. Travis Head and David Warner, both left-handed hitters, put on 70 runs for the first wicket between them before the veteran batsman was out for 39 in just 16 deliveries. Head was also removed for 34 off 18 after four balls. Then Marsh formed another important partnership with Glenn Maxwell, reaching a half-century stand before the captain was removed for a quick 35 off 25 balls. Maxwell managed to score 28 runs on 35 balls.
After 20 overs, Australia went onto make 201 runs, thanks to respectable efforts from Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Matthew Wade. Chris Jordan was the most successful bowler, taking 2 wickets for 44 runs, while Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, and Jofra Archer all claimed 1 wicket each.
2nd Innings: (England Batting)
England looked comfortable in reply, though, until they lost their opening pair, Jos Buttler and Philip Salt. Both had been making rapid runs against the seamers prior to being removed by Adam Zampa. Batting third, Jacks was only able to make 10 runs per ball. Even though England had wickets in hand, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood’s tight bowling stopped them from gaining momentum. As a result, England lost against the Australian team by 36 runs, failing to reach the target.
Mitchell Marsh Post Match Interview:
After this T20 World Cup 2024 Group B match, Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s effort, saying that “They played incredibly well overall and that experienced players also stepped up. They had a great start and had picked up some lessons from their first game as I didn’t try to change too much and the bowlers are skilled at what they do. I believe that Pat Cummins bowled exceptionally well from the hard end and as a team intend to continue studying and following our strategy for next games”.

After the loss in this T20 World Cup Group B match, England’s captain Jos Buttler in the post match presentation said, “They came out with a lot of intent and played really well, putting us under a lot of pressure straight away. It was difficult to pull it back from there.”

With another set of results to come, Jos Buttler’s team may have to rely on net run rate in order to qualify for the Super Eights, putting England at risk of not making it out of the group stage.
